The = small sort of Orang-Utan, viz. that of Vosmaer and of Edwards, he says, is= found only in Borneo, and chiefly about Banjermassing, Mampauwa, and Land= ak. Of these he had seen some fifty during his residence in the Indies; bu= t none exceeded 2-1/2 feet in length. The larger sort, [23] often regarded= as a chim=E6ra, continues Radermacher, would perhaps long have remained s= o, had it not been for the exertions of the Resident at Rembang, M. The tenth chapter of th= is work is entitled "De Animalibus qu=E6 in hac provincia reperiuntur," an= d contains a brief passage to the effect that "in the Songan country, on t= he banks of the Zaire, there are multitudes of apes, which [3] afford grea= t delight to the nobles by imitating human gestures."
