In this one the HOST command is gone. Aside from that the only changes of substance are some more examples added (new server, so slightly different style), and the description of how to read the examples moved, and was reworded a little (made more clear that the examples are just examples and if there are bugs in them, they are bugs in the examples, not changes to the spec...) Unless anyone find any issues with this draft, I think it is done, and after it has appeared, I think a WG last call is in order (of course it is for our chair to decide, with WG input, if that should be done or not). I can do a new draft for the HOST command, containing more or less just what was there about it in the -08 mlst draft if that is what the WG wants. On the other hand, there's no particular reason why I should be doing that, the only reason I was writing the HOST text was because it was being included in the MLST draft. So, if the WG would like to appoint someone who will turn out revised drafts a little more quickly than I am typically able to manage, that's fine too, and I will send off the HOST text as it is now. kre From ftp-wg-owner@hethmon.com Wed Dec 8 10:21:26 1999 Received: from mail.hethmon.com (mail.hethmon.com [208.147.156.6]) by ietf.org (8.9.1a/8.9.1a) with SMTP id KAA11825 for ; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:21:25 -0500 (EST) Received: from mail (mail.hethmon.com [208.147.156.6]) by mail.hethmon.com (Hethmon Brothers Smtpd) id 19991208101933-9119-9 ; Wed, 08 Dec 1999 10:19:33 -0500 Received: from anarchy.io.com (anarchy.io.com [199.170.88.101]) by mail.hethmon.com (Hethmon Brothers Smtpd) id 19991208101931-1317-5 ; Wed, 08 Dec 1999 10:19:31 -0500 Received: from magnus (aus-as3-171.io.com [208.2.106.171]) by anarchy.io.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA15996 for ; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 09:17:13 -0600 Message-Id: <4.2.2.19991208085814.00ba8640@mail.io.com> X-Sender: alun@mail.io.com X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.2 In-Reply-To: <9172.944646643@munnari.OZ.AU> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:19:31 -0500 X-OldDate: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 09:03:04 -0600 Sender: ftp-wg-owner X-Listname: ftp-wg@hethmon.com Reply-To: FTPEXT Working Group From: Alun Jones To: FTPEXT Working Group Subject: Ftp-WG: mlst draft -09 At 03:55 AM 12/8/99 , you wrote: >I can do a new draft for the HOST command, containing more or less just >what was there about it in the -08 mlst draft if that is what the WG wants. >On the other hand, there's no particular reason why I should be doing that, >the only reason I was writing the HOST text was because it was being included >in the MLST draft. With my wife studying up for her Windows-2000 exams, I find myself wondering if an emphasis wouldn't better be put on asking that clients respect the SRV records of DNS servers (as specified in RFC 2052, about to be superseded). This would have the advantage (for me) of not requiring any changes to an FTP server - the client would look up the service record for _ftp._tcp.yourdomain and use the address and port information returned from that to connect to an FTP server for that domain. The unfortunate side of this is that there are very few decent tools for DNS resolution in the Windows world - while bind and its resolver libraries are available in NT, and resolv at least will work on 95/98, there is no consideration made (that I could find) to creating a non-blocking request, let alone one more in line with the Winsock asynchronous methods of working, that would allow a typical Windows program to carry on its processing (especially UI components) while querying for such a record. I would imagine Windows isn't the only place where there is no good API for DNS resolving that would allow use of the SRV record. This draft is a work item of the Extensions to FTP Working Group of the IETF. Title : Extensions to FTP Author(s) : R. Elz, P. Hethmon Filename : draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-09.txt Pages : 55 Date : 08-Dec-99 In order to overcome the problems caused by the undefined format of the current FTP LIST command output, a new command is needed to transfer standardized listing information from Server-FTP to User- FTP. Commands to enable this are defined in this document. In order to allow consenting clients and servers to interact more freely, a quite basic, and optional, virtual file store structure is defined. This proposal also extends the FTP protocol to allow character sets other than US-ASCII[1] by allowing the transmission of 8-bit characters and the recommended use of UTF-8[2] encoding. Much implemented, but long undocumented, mechanisms to permit restarts of interrupted data transfers in STREAM mode, are also included here. Changed in this version of this document: The HOST command has been removed to a draft of its own, Even more MLS* examples. This paragraph will be deleted from the final version of this document. A URL for this Internet-Draft is: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-09.txt Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then "get draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-09.txt". A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail. Send a message to: mailserv@ietf.org. In the body type: "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-09.txt". NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE" command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with "multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on how to manipulate these messages. Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the Internet-Draft. --NextPart Content-Type: Multipart/Alternative; Boundary="OtherAccess" --OtherAccess Content-Type: Message/External-body; access-type="mail-server"; server="mailserv@ietf.org" Content-Type: text/plain Content-ID: <19991208120302.I-D@ietf.org> ENCODING mime FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-09.txt --OtherAccess Content-Type: Message/External-body; name="draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-09.txt"; site="ftp.ietf.org"; access-type="anon-ftp"; directory="internet-drafts" Content-Type: text/plain Content-ID: <19991208120302.I-D@ietf.org> --OtherAccess-- --NextPart-- From ftp-wg-owner@hethmon.com Sun Dec 12 18:27:51 1999 Received: from mail.hethmon.com (mail.hethmon.com [208.147.156.6]) by ietf.org (8.9.1a/8.9.1a) with SMTP id SAA11931 for ; Sun, 12 Dec 1999 18:27:51 -0500 (EST) Received: from mail (mail.hethmon.com [208.147.156.6]) by mail.hethmon.com (Hethmon Brothers Smtpd) id 19991212182713-62270-10 ; Sun, 12 Dec 1999 18:27:13 -0500 Received: from master.eastleigh.ac.uk (master.eastleigh.ac.uk [194.176.144.5]) by mail.hethmon.com (Hethmon Brothers Smtpd) id 19991212182709-52353-8 ; Sun, 12 Dec 1999 18:27:10 -0500 Received: from ryan-3 (unverified [171.218.102.43]) by master.eastleigh.ac.uk (EMWAC SMTPRS 0.83) with SMTP id ; Sun, 12 Dec 1999 23:23:51 +0000 Message-ID: Date: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 18:27:11 -0500 X-OldDate: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 23:23:51 +0000 Sender: ftp-wg-owner X-Listname: ftp-wg@hethmon.com Reply-To: FTPEXT Working Group From: To: moretravel@hotmail.com Subject: Ftp-WG: 3 Days - 2 Nights - Tickets for Two - FREE! We have all heard about the vast amounts of information that
an investigator can obtain about an individual.
However, did you know
that you too can find out practically anything about a person and/or
business on your own? Armed with this professional but, easy to use
software, you too can use the same sources that private investigators
have used for years to track, locate, background check or screen almost
anyone.

You'll be amazed at what you can find out with this software!

TOOLKIT MEANS TOOLS - A COMPLETE SET
The toolkit provides you with a complete "how to" guide, a large
selection of tools and even databases that will aid you in just about
any type of informational investigation. Not only does the kit provide
you with the sources and tools that are useful in gathering information
on others but it will also provide you with an organized guide to what
each source can provide and where it's located.

Beware of detective type products (almost always html or text documents)
that claim they will show you how do everything using the net -
They simply cover their claims by providing you with links to
Information Brokers!

Special On-Line Pricing, Now Only $24.95!

The toolkit does provide an extensive listing of the sources that are
available right on the net and they can even be accessed right from the
program. However, any company that tells you that everything that you
might require can be found on the Net is simply including fee-based
information broker listings within their documents. Despite the vast
amount of information that is available, few states have everything
that you might need online. Therefore, the toolkit does not only provide
you with a large organized listing of the sites that are available on
the net but, also it provides a searchable database of all the offline
public government sources that can be found throughout the
United States. This database contains complete contact
information, notes on each source and will even print envelopes
addressed to any source that you choose. And, this is just a small
fraction of the overall package

And Much More!

FAR MORE THAN JUST A REPORT ON DISK OR HTML DOCUMENT!

Unlike most of the rest of the current internet detective
programs available, this program does not simply provide
you with a text file of resources (usually addresses and
phone numbers). Nor is it simply an HTML Document with
pretty pictures advertised as "software" (create your
own with Cyber-Detective) but rather it is a powerful
WIN95/98 program that provides you with the tools
necessary to locate and use the resources available
on the internet right from the program!

Go through the listings, when you find something that
interests you, click on it and up pops a box with an
informative description about the site. When you find
a site that you want to visit, you have the following
options:

GO DIRECTLY TO A SITE

If while reading through the numerous listings found
within Cyber-Detective you find a site that you wish to visit
immediately, simply click on the button "GO" and you
will be taken directly to the site.

CREATE YOUR OWN LINK DIRECTORIES

A link directory is an HTML document that you can load
into your browser. Once loaded, it provides you with
clickable links that you can use to navigate the internet.
Cyber-Detective allows you to create link directories from
the sources provided within the program.

When you find a site that you want to include into a
link directory, click on the check box beside the
listing. Once you have completed reading and checking
off the sites that you want to visit, press the Create
button and your selections are added to a link
directory HTML document and then loaded into your web
browser. You are also provided with the option of
saving them for later use.

This feature not only allows you to access the sources
provided by Cyber-Detective without loading the
program itself but also allows you to create
directories tailored to a certain function.

BUILT-IN INVESTIGATIVE DATABASES

The toolkit also provides you with investigative
databases that you will not find anywhere else including
the Information Sources dB (public record sources) and
an interface allowing complete access to the private
Investigative Sources dB (sources, tips, misc.
information) all without additional cost.

NOT JUST INFORMATION - MANY TOOLS

Although the toolkit is well worth its small price just for the
instructional information, databases and investigative
sources that it provides, it also has many useful
investigative software applications built right into it as well!

Cyber-Track & Spy

The CD Toolkit has an option that you can use to
create a Cyber-Track & Spy diskette. Armed with this
diskette you can track anyone's internet activity. Simply
install the secret tracking files from this diskette onto
a computer and all URLs visited will be secretly tracked
and recorded.

Disk Snoop

Disk Snoop is a simple but useful utility that will
allow you to quickly search any computer for internet
file types. Those who do not carefully delete the files
generated during their internet activity will be at the
mercy of this software.

Investigator's Electronic Notebook

Within the the Toolkit is another program that you
will find very useful in gathering information and managing
investigative related tasks. The I.E. Notebook has many
different tools including built-in SSN, area code, and FEIN
databases. Additionally it provides an online hookup to the
Cyber-Detective's IR. database.

Cyber-Detective Search Utility

The CD Search Utility allows you to perform
general and investigative type searches over the internet.
With one click of a button, one can retrieve general search
query results, people's addresses & phone numbers and
much more. (The search utility is a small scale version of
CD's Cyber-Data Retriever software)

Ultimately, we end up with HOST support >in both clients and servers, without any USER overloading. "If it were taken up by clients" is the crux of the issue. I agree that HOST is nice, and is a good way to avoid USER overloading. However, if we use USER overloading to get there, what is the benefit of introducing HOST to replace the functionality which is working using USER overloading? Once USER overloading is introduced, the incremental benefit of supporting the HOST command as well seems limited. It provides a way for the client to provide potentially conflicting information which the server has to handle, and clients don't even need to implement the command because USER overloading is there anyway. >The only problem is when you've got a user "fish" on a v-host >"alpha.isp.com", no HOST command, and a user "fish@alpha.isp.com" on the >default site. I imagine you'd have to try both, and see which it was by the >password, something that's been mentioned before here many moons past - >Stephen Tihor mentioned it, I think. The basic assumption here is that there is a "default site". I don't think that default sites need to be considered. A site running virtual hosting might not have a default site at all; it could very well be an error if no site is specified (this is the HTTP method). For sites running n virtual sites, and a single default site (and there can never be more than one default) could even have one IP address for the n virtual sites, and one IP address for the default site, and use the destination IP address of the connection to disambiguate. Essentially, this boils down to running a server where a virtual host must be specified by the client, and one where it doesn't really matter. They could be provided by the same process; it doesn't really matter. When enough clients are sending the hostname as part of the username the special IP address for the default site can be turned off, and there is no need for a "default" site. As client functionality progresses, the site operator will be able to measure how many clients are providing the default hostname as part of the USER command, even on the default site, and be able to decide when to turn of the special IP address.
