Me, I help my kids with their website, BookJackets.com ( http://www.bookjackets.com ). I'm very proud of the work Nathan, Miriam, Aaron, and Tovah have done in putting together a quality site that is about childrens books and their authors. They have done this in order to help other kids find high quality books, and to help promote childrens authors and keep them writing. They have also built this site as a way of learning about the Internet and running a small business, as well as possibly to help pay for their own college educations (I am certainly in favor of that!). The kids have put some creative touches into their site, including the ability to order some out of print books directly from the authors (autographed!). For some of the books you can also click on an option to hear a portion of the book read to you. I am encouraging them to continue this effort, and I'm asking for your help also. Please visit their site at http://www.bookjackets.com . From their site you can order books from Amazon.com, with a small portion of each sale going to support the website. Additionally, if you order any books at all from Amazon and do so by first going thru the BookJackets.com site, Amazon will send a small portion to BookJackets.com . Of course, if you visit the site and want to send them a small message of encouragement or suggestions, they would certainly appreciate that also ( mailto:bookjackets@yahoo.com ). And please feel free to forward this message on to everyone you know! Thank you! Joel Ackerman Advisor to BookJackets.com, Proud Parent, Shameless Promoter, Doesn't Have to Sell Cookies! P.S. The notes were produced by Wes Rischel, director of the Healthcare Research Division. Even though the information is presented with a slant toward healthcare I believe the information he presents is applicable to all industries. IMO, Gartner Group is the first Industry Analyst to succinctly capture the requirements for E-Commerce AND provide a clear path through the "forest" of E-Commerce "standards". Great job Wes, hope you're on one of these lists. I know many of the readers on the list are Gartner clients, I encourage you to take a look at Wes Rischel's notes: 1. The past weeks i have been reading up on the EDI universe, at all places I could find, about things such as UNECE, CEFACT, EDIFACT, EWG OO-EDI, X12, xmledi-group, ebXML, X.435, and naturally..EDIINT drafts and mailing list. (its taken a while, I assure you) I was wondering if you could help me clarify some simple things. As far as i have understood the AS1 and AS2 dokuments are close to being finished. But how close? I dont mean specific date's here, just to know if you *still* are simply waiting on clearance from above,(iesg?) or are there still issues to be defined and discussed in the wg before one can expect these documents to become rfc's? (I saw some mails about new findings that might warrant a new/more discussions..?) Are there any *offical* plans to update the rfc 1767? Adressing. When i comes to adressing of the applications that actually receive and process the edi-data, there isnt really any standards are there? The use of To: and From: lines (or AS2-To, and AS2-From for HTTP as I understood) and the actual URI adress used for POST-ing, is completely up to the application designers and so on? I'm am just getting a bit puzzled about the different levels of adressing...the URI, the to:/from: lines, the IEA, UNH, GS lines, any more? It's a bit fyzzy if you want to have a simple way of adresssing an application i think. Fuzzy question I guess, but any comment appreciated.. ebXML? Is there any intercommunication between ebXML and your workgroup? *Browsing* through the 0.21d version of the "Messaging service specification", they several times use/show examples of mime types that the think could/should? be used, such as: "Content Type: multipart/related; type=application/vnd.eb+xml; version..." and so on. I would have thought that there is a need for *some kind* integration between your respektive organisations, to ensure that you dont travel separate ways..or have i misunderstood something? And then a short but I suppose slightly unrelated question. Is there anyone here that is aware of any work done on edi-specific solutions for availability and redundancy? I would think that it would be handled like any other application but i thought i might ask, just in case I appologize for the intrusion, but I hope you can give me some kind of answers on my questions. This is being released today. David Fischer Drummond Group +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For Immediate Release: Seven Vendors complete First Secure EDI over the Internet (based on HTTP) Conformance Validation Test under UCC sponsorship “Important Step in Enabling eBusiness,” says co-author of the AS2 spec, Rik Drummond of Drummond Group, Inc. Austin, TX; December 20, 2000. The Uniform Code Council (UCC), a leading global standards organization, and Drummond Group today announced that bTrade.com, Compaq Computer Corporation, Cyclone Commerce, IPNet Solutions, Netfish Technologies, Sterling Commerce and webMethods, Inc. have achieved mutual interoperability by passing the first B2B AS2 Conformance Validation Test. This draft standard allows vendor applications to communicate EDI data over the Internet (via HTTP) in a secure manner. COMPANIES PRODUCTS bTrade.com SecureAccess2000, EDIINT engine vs. 1.38 Compaq Compaq ASx Transport Service (CATS), vs 2.0 Cyclone Commerce Cyclone Interchange, vs 3.1 IPNet Solutions eBizness™ Transact 3.3 Netfish Technologies XDI Product Suite, vs 4.2 Sterling Commerce E-Marketplace Enabling Services, vs 3.3 webMethods, Inc. webMethods B2B™, vs 3.6 “AS2 gives a company the ability to exchange data in real time in a secure manner over the Internet to other AS2 interoperable companies. Using this technology, gives a high return on investment to a company,” says Rik Drummond, CEO of the Drummond Group who managed the testing process. “It will greatly decrease the cost of doing business in EDI and one can expect savings of 60% or more over traditional VAN costs.” Drummond Group, who also facilitated the testing process for three years of AS1 testing, has been instrumental in bringing a new level of interoperability to EDI over the Internet products. Their test process provides a venue for vendors to test and correct their software systems in a non-competitive environment. “In our experience, we found that testing against a single implementation is not as effective as testing among the participating vendors,” says Beth Morrow, Vice President Drummond Group. “The vendors are able to gain much more insight on their product’s functionality in the marketplace and in this way ensure interoperability.” Another round of testing is planned for the year 2001. Drummond Group, Inc. (www.drummondgroup.com) provides B2B strategy, research analysis, and industry pilot facilitation. Founded by Rik Drummond, a recognized leader in eBusiness and international standards organizations, the group represents best-of-breed in the industry on horizontal infrastructure technologies and standards which support B2B commerce. Key areas include XML, Internet EDI, PKI, EAI, architecture, integration, interoperability and B2B business models.
