I have followed some of the previous discussion in this area (notably http://www.majordojo.com/atom/overloading_atomcategory.php and http://torrez.us/archives/2006/05/25/447/). I have described the system here before, but briefly, faculty members can manage their digital "stuff" (images, mp3s, quicktime movies, pdfs, etc) by creating a collection and can add any metadata they wish, based on attributes (aka fields) they have specified. The semantics of these attributes are collection-specific so that collection owners can feel free to create any sort of schema they wish without reference to any authority (Dublin Core, LCSH, etc.) in the style of FileMaker, Excel, etc. On a collection-by-collection basis, we can create mappings to standard metadata schemas (Dublin Core, MODS, VRA Core, LCSH, etc.) for exporting purposes. That said, I need to provide some means by which we can apply very basic sematics to some of the attributes so that the system can "talk" Atom to itself and other systems. I already have a simple algorithm for determining what can be considered a "title" for the item and I can come up with an easy way to determine metadata that's likely to be a "summary" and metadata that describes "rights" information. I can also extract "updated" from the system. But I suspect "category" might provide a place for some of the other attributes while staying within the Atom namespace. Does anyone have any thoughts on how we determine the "categoriness" of an attribute algoritmically? Collection owners can specify occurrence cardinality (0:1,0:m,1:m,1:1) for attributes, but not uniqueness constraints (obviously, a unique attribute such as 'serial number' is NOT category-like). "Tags" work nicely as categories as do any attributes that have a predefined scope of values (collection owners can, in fact, define the set of possible values for an attribute). In addition to items in collections, I would like to have Atom feeds that describe the attributes themselves. Our "attributes" database table includes columns with information about the attribute (sort order, whether it is included in basic search, whether it is public or private, etc.) and I have shoehorned these into Atom categories as illustrated by this snippet of an Atom feed: .... http://example.com/american_politics_collection/att/scratch_pad scratch_pad ... Does anyone have any thoughts on the appropriateness of this use for Atom categories? many thanks- Peter Keane daseproject.org From owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org Fri Nov 09 12:20:20 2007 Return-path: Received: from [10.91.34.44] (helo=ietf-mx.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IqXWm-0004tp-BH for atompub-archive@lists.ietf.org; Fri, 09 Nov 2007 12:20:20 -0500 Received: from balder-227.proper.com ([192.245.12.227]) by ietf-mx.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IqXWg-0006MH-0L for atompub-archive@lists.ietf.org; Fri, 09 Nov 2007 12:20:20 -0500 Received: from balder-227.proper.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by balder-227.proper.com (8.13.5/8.13.5) with ESMTP id lA9H80aJ021026 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 9 Nov 2007 10:08:00 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by balder-227.proper.com (8.13.5/8.13.5/Submit) id lA9H80XP021025; Fri, 9 Nov 2007 10:08:00 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org) X-Authentication-Warning: balder-227.proper.com: majordom set sender to owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org using -f Received: from an-out-0708.google.com (an-out-0708.google.com [209.85.132.241]) by balder-227.proper.com (8.13.5/8.13.5) with ESMTP id lA9H7vFN021018 for ; Fri, 9 Nov 2007 10:07:59 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from jasnell@gmail.com) Received: by an-out-0708.google.com with SMTP id c36so90031ana for ; Fri, 09 Nov 2007 09:07:57 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject:references:in-reply-to:x-enigmail-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=LEWtYIUwJd6K+0Ijf9OGMUtx0G8hhOjQVR5004fv65o=; b=QHqOqqTaw6UCfjzpoO8mQgYz8GfzoEn60rlNbvMHDAkDey4IghyUJBQ0RUjjVjAO7zgmwYNVHSkTc5Wo0h9CzxZCCwYNb2be6awG/1+jMR5CNleGYBWiPQAmY/CvRcODuABjvr+mEWXS/U7NkvGrScbITeA/Ds+VVmutYV97An4= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject:references:in-reply-to:x-enigmail-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=XDM7VOpP0wCfSfNpvw0WuamDivF1MgsYSPCzAvoGKFLmXl+7Z8/GwxxZ+mNYvnZ8RjrJha8AmUwUWJP5TBAX9dm8sYFbavuqmlXex9YOh4mRfXEiL9e+7HT9oWVQB90/X0c/L9L9c6x+9DD0kWgHc91R+9dAcLIrmmabxxZEq/I= Received: by 10.100.249.9 with SMTP id w9mr3238923anh.1194628076925; Fri, 09 Nov 2007 09:07:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from ?192.168.1.2? When a feed is paged according to RFC 5023 and someone requests a particular page in the feed, should the ID element and “self” link include the page number?

If they should include the page number, should the first page of the feed include the page number in the ID and Self URIs as well?

Matt.

No. Most certainly the `self` link should not, as it=E2=80=99s supposed to be the address that aggregators subscribe to; you=E2=80=99re very unlikely to want aggregators to subscribe to the 10th page of a paged feed. For the feed ID it=E2=80=99s not always quite clear-cut when it should be the same and when it should differ, but in this particular case it is obviously the same feed and hence should have the same ID. (Note well that the feed ID may well be entirely opaque with no way to include arbitrary information, such as a UUID.) It only says: A paged feed is a set of linked feed documents that together contain the entries of a logical feed, without any guarantees about the stability of each document's contents. An archived feed is a set of feed documents that can be combined to accurately reconstruct the entries of a logical feed. In section 4.2.6 of RFC 4287: The "atom:id" element conveys a permanent, universally unique identifier for an entry or feed. When an Atom Document is relocated, migrated, syndicated, republished, exported, or imported, the content of its atom:id element MUST NOT change. Put another way, an atom:id element pertains to all instantiations of a particular Atom entry or feed; revisions retain the same content in their atom:id elements. It is suggested that the atom:id element be stored along with the associated resource. The content of an atom:id element MUST be created in a way that assures uniqueness. In section 2 of RFC 4287: This specification describes two kinds of Atom Documents: Atom Feed Documents and Atom Entry Documents. An Atom Feed Document is a representation of an Atom feed, including metadata about the feed, and some or all of the entries associated with it. Its root is the atom:feed element. It looks that each Atom feed document should have its own id in RFC 4287.= .. -Franklin -------------------------------------------------- From: "Eric Scheid" Date: Tuesday, 13 November, 2007 09:44 To: "Atom Syntax" Subject: Re: Paged Feeds Question > >> For the feed ID it=C2=B9s not always quite clear-cut when it should be >> the same and when it should differ, but in this particular case >> it is obviously the same feed and hence should have the same ID. >> (Note well that the feed ID may well be entirely opaque with no >> way to include arbitrary information, such as a UUID.) > > Note too that the feed ID is the way you know that the page of atom=20 > entries > retrieved from [1] is from the same feed as the page of atom entries > retrieved from [2]. > > e. > > [1] some opaque URL, details not important > [2] some other opaque URL, which apart from and despite being opaque=20 > doesn't > otherwise suggest any relationship to [1] at all > > >=20 From owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org Tue Nov 13 06:43:37 2007 Return-path: Received: from [10.91.34.44] (helo=ietf-mx.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IruB7-0005uM-6n for atompub-archive@lists.ietf.org; Tue, 13 Nov 2007 06:43:37 -0500 Received: from balder-227.proper.com ([192.245.12.227]) by ietf-mx.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IruB3-0006YF-QH for atompub-archive@lists.ietf.org; Tue, 13 Nov 2007 06:43:37 -0500 Received: from balder-227.proper.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by balder-227.proper.com (8.13.5/8.13.5) with ESMTP id lADBTQjY095626 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Tue, 13 Nov 2007 04:29:26 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by balder-227.proper.com (8.13.5/8.13.5/Submit) id lADBTQlG095625; Tue, 13 Nov 2007 04:29:26 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org) X-Authentication-Warning: balder-227.proper.com: majordom set sender to owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org using -f Received: from ironclad.net.au ([203.30.247.11]) by balder-227.proper.com (8.13.5/8.13.5) with SMTP id lADBTOZw095550 for ; Tue, 13 Nov 2007 04:29:25 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from eric.scheid@ironclad.net.au) Received: from [203.30.247.18] ([203.30.247.18] verified) by ironclad.net.au (Stalker SMTP Server 1.7) with ESMTP id S.1903745323 for ; Tue, 13 Nov 2007 22:28:51 +1100 User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.1.1.2418 Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 22:28:53 +1100 Subject: Re: Paged Feeds Question From: Eric Scheid To: Atom Syntax Message-ID: In-Reply-To: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-atom-syntax@mail.imc.org Precedence: bulk List-Archive: List-Unsubscribe: List-ID: X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Scan-Signature: ea4ac80f790299f943f0a53be7e1a21a On 13/11/07 9:27 PM, "Franklin Tse" wrote: > In section 2 of RFC 4287: > >> An Atom Feed Document is a representation of an Atom feed, including >> metadata about the feed, and some or all of the entries associated >> with it. I don=E2=80=99t see how that sort of conclusion can be supported by the very spec section you quoted yourself: When an Atom Document is relocated, migrated, syndicated, republished, exported, or imported, the content of its atom:id element MUST NOT change. Put another way, an atom:id element pertains to all instantiations of a particular Atom entry or feed; revisions retain the same content in their atom:id elements. I think that needs to inform a reading of the section you quoted from RFC=C2=A05005: A paged feed is a set of linked feed documents that together contain the entries of a logical feed, without any guarantees about the stability of each document's contents. An archived feed is a set of feed documents that can be combined to accurately reconstruct the entries of a logical feed. It seems relatively clear to me that =E2=80=9Call instantiations of a particular Atom feed=E2=80=9D in RFC=C2=A04287 and =E2=80=9Ca logical fee= d=E2=80=9D in RFC=C2=A05005 refer to the same concept. And so while the latter may say nothing about feed IDs, it seems to me that an intent pretty strongly implied. The problem is, of course, that this is very much a case of =E2=80=9CI know it when I see it=E2=80=9D: what constitutes a logical feed is not mechanically decidable. A spec can therefore not make any potent mandates about such issues, and is reduced to vague language. But vague language doesn=E2=80=99t imply an absence of intent; it merely means that the intents in question defy precise codification. Of course, at the cost of writing software that does nothing very useful, you can insist on a literal reading of the letter of the spec. This is the preferred URI for retrieving Atom Feed Documents representing this Atom feed. So, does this mean that the atom:link with rel="self" should have a href to the first page of a paged feed or the subscription document of an archived feed? -Franklin -------------------------------------------------- From: "James Holderness" Date: Tuesday, 13 November, 2007 19:57 To: "Atom Syntax" Subject: Re: Paged Feeds Question > > I have to agree with Eric and Aristotle. > >> The "atom:id" element conveys a permanent, universally unique >> identifier for an entry or feed. > > > Note that says "feed", not "feed document". > >> An Atom Feed Document is a representation of an Atom feed, including >> metadata about the feed, and some or all of the entries associated >> with it. > > That tells us that a feed *document* can be a representation of *some* of > the feed. By subscription document, do you mean the subscribable, public version of the feed? If so, yes, it=E2=80=99s probably a good idea for the `self` link to that one, not the paged feed. There is no intent here the way there is with feed IDs, though. It=E2=80=99s just a matter of pragmatism. It=E2=80=99s clear that you don=E2=80=99t want aggregators subscribing to= any page of an archive feed, ever. It=E2=80=99s also pretty clear why you don=E2=80=99t want aggregators sub= scribing to the 10th page of a collection feed: they might have to wait a very long time until they see entries that were posted very recently. As for whether aggregators should subscribe to a collection feed or the public feed, note well that collection feeds SHOULD be ordered by app:edited =E2=80=93 so aggregators subscribed to a collection feed might frequently find it changed without any new entries having been posted. It=E2=80=99s even conceivable that the opposite happens =E2=80=93 that editing churn pushes newly posted entries off the first page of the feed in less than a reasonable aggregator polling interval, so that the aggregator misses them completely. So overall, it is best for aggregators to subscribe to the public published feed. You are free to make a different decision on a case-by-case basis though. I think the situation can be improved if the Feed Validator adds some recommendations. Based on the discussions before, the following rules should be added: 1. If first, last, previous, next, prev-archive, next-archive or current is found, issue a notice reminding the publisher that all of the feed documents of a paged feed or an archived feed should share the same feed ID 2. If the href of a "current" link is not equal to the href of the "self" link, issue a warning or a notice However, Sam's archived feed is not following the recommendations above: http://intertwingly.net/blog/archives/index.atom http://intertwingly.net/blog/archives/2007/10/index.atom -Franklin ------------------------------------------------- From: "Eric Scheid" Date: Wednesday, 14 November, 2007 04:56 To: "Atom Syntax" Subject: Re: Paged Feeds Question > > On 14/11/07 12:05 AM, "Franklin Tse" wrote: > >> o atom:feed elements SHOULD contain one atom:link element with a rel >> attribute value of "self". People may have a reason for advertising the archive document's URI in "self", and I don't see what the utility of repeating it is. YMMV.
